Students may use a reading scale to determine their current standing and to measure progress. This is another idea from Burke. It could be particularly effective when used with a learning log combined with an effective SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) program.
The continuum is as follows:
Inexperienced Reader (1)
Less Experienced Reader (2)
Moderately Experienced Reader (3)
Experienced Reader (4)
Exceptionally Experienced Reader (5)
Burke provides detailed explanation of the criteria for each of the levels in this scale. It would be interesting to use this scale in individual learning logs and as an informal means of assessing the status of the class on the spot. One of the ways that this could be used is by creating a poll, using a website such as Poll Everywhere. Then, students could text their responses (anonymously) to be displayed on the board in real time.
